Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir | April 20, 2025: A devastating landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall and a cloudburst, struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district early Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two children. The calamity has caused extensive damage to infrastructure, displacing numerous residents and disrupting essential services.
Deputy Commissioner Baseer-Ul-Haq Chaudhary reported that approximately 200 to 250 houses have been damaged, with the most severe impact observed in Ramban town. In Bagahana village, two houses collapsed due to the landslide, leading to the fatalities. Rescue operations are currently underway, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local teams deployed to assist affected residents.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), a critical transportation artery, has been closed at multiple locations due to landslides and mudslides, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. Authorities have advised the public to avoid travel on this route until clearance operations are completed and weather conditions improve.
In response to the disaster, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary visited the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand. He assured residents that the government is committed to providing all necessary assistance and support during this challenging time.
Political leaders have expressed their condolences and called for swift action. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti urged the administration to prioritize the evacuation of vulnerable groups and provide essential supplies. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conveyed his grief over the incident and emphasized the importance of immediate rescue efforts and long-term preventive measures.
The administration has announced the closure of all government and private educational institutions in Ramban district on April 21, 2025, as a precautionary measure. Residents are advised to stay indoors and remain vigilant as rescue and relief operations continue.
