Kashmir Authorities Assure Ample Essential Supplies Amid Highway Closure

Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir | April 21, 2025: In response to public concerns following the temporary closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to landslides, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, V.K. Bidhuri, has assured residents that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the Valley.

Addressing the media, Bidhuri emphasized that the region has a robust stockpile of food grains, sufficient to meet demands for over a year. He also highlighted that the current reserves include a 17-day supply of LPG, ensuring uninterrupted availability for households.

Regarding fuel, the daily consumption of diesel in Kashmir stands at approximately 1,000 kilolitres, with existing reserves totaling 12,500 kilolitres—adequate for 12 to 13 days. For petrol, with a daily usage of around 625 kilolitres, the Valley currently holds nearly 10,000 kilolitres in stock.

Bidhuri urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic buying, stating, “There is no need to line up at petrol pumps or panic. The situation is normal and under control.” He also cautioned against hoarding, which could disrupt the equitable distribution of resources.

Despite these assurances, reports indicate that many residents have been queuing at fuel stations, leading to increased demand and potential strain on supplies. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to restore normalcy on the highway to facilitate the smooth movement of goods and services.
