Over 3.7 Lakh Educated Youth Unemployed in Jammu & Kashmir: Government Data Highlights Employment Challenges

Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir | April 21, 2025: Recent government data reveals that over 3.70 lakh educated youth are registered as unemployed in Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring significant employment challenges in the region. The figures, presented in the Legislative Assembly, indicate that as of January 2025, a total of 3,70,811 individuals have registered on the Union Territory’s employment portal.

The breakdown of registered unemployed youth includes:

  • 66,628 graduates
  • 47,114 postgraduates
  • 15,396 other degree holders
  • 9,884 diploma holders

The voluntary registration process aims to connect job-seekers with various government schemes and employment opportunities. However, the high number of educated individuals seeking employment highlights a disconnect between academic qualifications and job market demands.

In response to the unemployment crisis, the Jammu and Kashmir government has launched several initiatives under the Mission Youth program, including:

  • Mumkin Scheme: Focuses on livelihood opportunities in the transport sector.
  • Tejaswini Scheme: Aims to empower young women through targeted initiatives.
  • Parvaaz Scheme: Supports youth in preparing for competitive and recruitment examinations.
  • Mission Yuva: Aims to create over 1.37 lakh new enterprises and generate more than 4.25 lakh employment opportunities within five years.

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. The unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 23.1%, significantly higher than the national average of 7.4%. Delays in government recruitment processes and a lack of private-sector growth have further exacerbated the situation.

Experts emphasize the need for a shift from a degree-centric approach to one that prioritizes skill development and industry-oriented education. Strengthening vocational training and fostering entrepreneurship are crucial steps toward addressing the employment gap and ensuring sustainable economic growth in the region.
