Harvard Sues Trump Administration Over $2.2 Billion Federal Grant Freeze

Boston, MA | April 22, 2025: Harvard University has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to challenge the freeze of over $2.2 billion in research grants. The university contends that the administration’s actions infringe upon its autonomy and violate constitutional protections.

The dispute began after Harvard declined to comply with federal demands, which included overhauling leadership and admissions policies, auditing campus diversity initiatives, ceasing recognition of certain student organizations, and disciplining protesters. These demands followed accusations that universities, including Harvard, permitted antisemitism during protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Harvard President Alan Garber emphasized the university’s commitment to academic freedom, stating that the government’s actions threaten the institution’s independence and the broader landscape of American higher education.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, argues that the funding freeze is arbitrary and capricious, lacking a rational connection to the alleged concerns. Harvard asserts that the freeze violates its First Amendment rights and the Civil Rights Act.

The Trump administration has defended its position, asserting that federal funding is a privilege and accusing Harvard of misusing taxpayer funds. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated, “The gravy train of federal assistance to institutions like Harvard… is coming to an end.”

This legal battle underscores the escalating tensions between the federal government and academic institutions over issues of governance, free speech, and the role of higher education in society.
