Sambhal Circle Officer Anuj Choudhary Cleared Over Controversial Holi Remarks

Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh | April 19, 2025: Circle Officer (CO) Anuj Choudhary of Sambhal district has been given a clean chit by the Uttar Pradesh Police following an investigation into his remarks made during a peace committee meeting ahead of Holi. Choudhary had stated that individuals uncomfortable with Holi celebrations should stay indoors, noting that “Holi comes once a year, whereas Friday prayers occur 52 times annually.”

The statement, made in the context of Holi coinciding with Friday prayers, drew criticism and led to a complaint by retired IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who alleged that Choudhary’s comments violated service conduct rules. However, the investigation, led by Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Kumar Awasthi, found no credible evidence supporting the allegations, resulting in Choudhary being exonerated.

Choudhary’s remarks emphasized the importance of communal harmony and mutual respect during festivals, urging people to celebrate together while respecting each other’s sentiments. He also appealed to avoid forcibly applying colors on those who do not wish to participate.

This incident is not the first time Choudhary has faced controversy; earlier this year, he was seen participating in a religious procession in uniform, which also attracted public attention.

The clean chit has sparked discussions on the balance between maintaining public order and respecting religious sentiments in a diverse society.
