The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has condemned the Modi government’s proposed launch of the “Waqf Umeed Portal” on June 6, 2025, labelling it an “illegal” move and a clear case of contempt of court. The Board asserted that this digital initiative, which is tied to the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, undermines ongoing legal proceedings in the Supreme Court where the Act is currently under review.

AIMPLB’s legal panel has announced plans to file a contempt petition against the Centre. They argue that moving forward with the portal—intended to digitize and centralize Waqf property records—violates the judiciary’s directions and potentially strips State Waqf Boards of autonomy.

In a strong statement, AIMPLB called on Muslims across the country to boycott the portal, warning that registering Waqf properties on the platform may lead to permanent loss of community assets. Prominent AIMPLB member Dr. Qasim Rasool Ilyas accused the government of bypassing legal frameworks to weaken Muslim institutions.

The Board emphasized that the Supreme Court had already warned the Centre not to interfere with existing Waqf properties pending the final judgment. Despite this, the Modi government is pressing ahead with its plans, triggering widespread opposition from Muslim organizations and legal experts.

This confrontation reflects growing tensions between the government and religious bodies over minority rights and religious endowments.
