Kathua, Jammu & Kashmir | April 24, 2025: Rakesh Sharma, a senior journalist from Dainik Jagran, was allegedly assaulted by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers while covering a protest in Kathua against the recent Pahalgam incident. The altercation occurred after Sharma posed questions regarding potential security lapses under the BJP-led Union government.

During the protest at Kalibari Chowk, led by BJP legislators Devinder Manyal, Rajiv Jasrotia, and Bharat Bhushan, Sharma inquired about the accountability of the Ministry of Home Affairs concerning the Pahalgam attack. While Manyal responded calmly, tensions escalated when party worker Himanshu Sharma accused the journalist of using “separatist language.” Subsequently, Himanshu Sharma, along with Ravinder Singh, Ashwani Sharma, Manjit Singh, Tony, and Parveen Chuna, allegedly assaulted Rakesh Sharma.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravinder Singh intervened and transported Sharma to the Government Medical College hospital for treatment.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Senior journalists met with Senior Superintendent of Police Shobhit Saxena, demanding the registration of an FIR against the accused and their immediate arrest. In solidarity, journalists staged protests at Shaheedi Chowk in Kathua and outside the Press Club in Jammu, announcing a boycott of all BJP events until appropriate action is taken.

The Pradesh Congress Committee also condemned the attack, highlighting concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists.
