The Indian National Congress has strongly criticized the Modi government, accusing it of misusing the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) to suppress dissent and weaken the constitutional rights of citizens. In a sharp statement, Congress alleged that the draconian law is being wielded as a political weapon to target activists, journalists, students, and minorities under the guise of national security.
Congress spokespersons highlighted the increasing number of arrests under UAPA, many of which lack conclusive evidence or result in prolonged detentions without trial. They pointed out that the conviction rate under the law remains alarmingly low, raising concerns about its actual intent and application.
“The Modi government is using the UAPA as a tool to instill fear and silence any form of criticism or resistance. This goes against the very fabric of our democracy and constitutional freedoms,” the party stated.
They further demanded an independent review of UAPA cases and called for urgent reforms to safeguard democratic values and human rights in the country.
