In a surprise overnight operation, Mumbai Police removed eight loudspeakers from mosques in the eastern suburbs of the city as part of efforts to enforce noise pollution regulations. The action has sparked debate and concern among community members, with some viewing it as selective enforcement.
According to officials, the loudspeakers were taken down from mosques in Govandi and surrounding areas after complaints were received regarding noise levels during early morning prayers. Authorities stated that the action was carried out following due process and in accordance with the Supreme Court’s guidelines on permissible decibel levels and usage hours for loudspeakers.
However, community leaders expressed dismay at what they described as abrupt action without prior notice or community engagement. Many fear that such moves could deepen communal tensions and disproportionately target religious minorities.
The issue of loudspeaker usage at religious places has been a flashpoint in several Indian states, with political and religious groups taking opposing stances. While officials claim the objective is to maintain public order and reduce noise pollution, critics argue that the enforcement often appears one-sided.
No reports of violence or resistance were reported during the removal operation, and police say further inspections may follow.
