Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala | April 22, 2025: An arms training camp organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Mar Ivanios College, a Christian-managed institution in Kerala’s capital, has ignited significant controversy. The event, part of the RSS Officers’ Training Camp scheduled for May 2, commenced on April 17 and has drawn sharp criticism from student organizations.
The Student Federation of India (SFI) and the Kerala Students Union (KSU) have vehemently opposed the camp, questioning the college administration’s decision to permit such an event on educational premises. SFI’s Thiruvananthapuram district committee labeled the use of educational institutions and places of worship for arms training as “unconstitutional” and a “grave threat to peace and social unity.” They emphasized that schools should be centers of knowledge, not venues for spreading fear.
Adding to the controversy, Malayalam news channel MediaOne released exclusive footage of the training activities, intensifying public debate. The college management has not provided clear information regarding who authorized the program, leading to further scrutiny.
Both SFI and KSU highlighted what they perceive as double standards, noting that while student organizations are often restricted from holding political events or even bringing flags onto campus, the RSS was granted permission for an arms training camp. The timing of the camp, which began on Good Friday—a significant day for the Christian community—has also been criticized as insensitive.
Student bodies are calling for immediate intervention from authorities to halt the training and prevent educational institutions from being used for activities that could promote communalism and violence. They urge all sections of society to stand united against the normalization of such events in academic spaces.
