Two Women Arrested in Bihar’s Katihar for Smuggling Liquor Under Burqas

Katihar, Bihar | April 19, 2025: In a significant enforcement of Bihar’s prohibition laws, two women were arrested in Katihar district for allegedly smuggling liquor concealed beneath burqas. The arrests occurred near Maniya railway station on Thursday, following intelligence inputs received by the Prohibition Excise & Registration Department. Upon frisking, authorities recovered a substantial quantity of liquor bottles from the women’s possession.

Inspector Subhash Kumar Singh confirmed that the women, identified as non-Muslims, were attempting to use the traditional Islamic attire to evade detection. This incident underscores the lengths to which individuals may go to circumvent the state’s stringent alcohol ban, implemented in April 2016.

In a separate operation within the district, two additional individuals were apprehended after liquor was seized from their residences in the Durgapur Laliyahi area.

These arrests highlight ongoing challenges in enforcing prohibition laws and the innovative methods employed to smuggle alcohol. Authorities continue to remain vigilant to uphold the state’s ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol.
