A 23‑year‑old Muslim youth in Uttar Pradesh was violently assaulted by a mob after he visited a Hindu friend at her residence. The victim and the young woman, who are acquainted but not romantically involved, were meeting innocently when a group of approximately 25–30 individuals forcibly entered the premises, shouting slogans, damaging his clothes, and physically attacking him with sticks and stones. He sustained serious injuries—bruises, lacerations, and suspected fractures—and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed the severity of his condition.
Police arrived on the scene and have registered an FIR against multiple accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code addressing assault, trespass, and public disturbance. Investigations are underway; authorities have appealed for calm and requested community cooperation to ensure a lawful and peaceful resolution. Local community leaders have urged both religious groups to resist rumours and inflammatory remarks. They emphasise that interfaith interactions, including friendships, are not criminal, and that such violence cannot be tolerated in a pluralistic society.
The incident follows a pattern of escalating tensions under the contested “love jihad” narrative in Uttar Pradesh, where suspicion often attaches to interfaith gatherings, frequently amplified without legal basis. Observers warn that unverified claims and vigilantism may fuel communal divisions unless checked through timely judicial and civic action.
