Tensions in the Red Sea have escalated again after another commercial vessel was attacked, days following the sinking of a bulk carrier claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The targeted ship, operating in international waters, suffered damage but remained afloat. No casualties have been reported so far.
According to maritime security sources, the latest attack is believed to be a retaliatory move by the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, who have increasingly targeted vessels they allege are linked to Israel or its allies. The previous sinking marked the first confirmed vessel loss since the rebels began their campaign in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
International maritime watchdogs have warned that these escalating assaults threaten global shipping routes through the Red Sea, particularly those connecting Europe and Asia. The U.S. and allied naval forces have increased patrols in the region, but the Houthis continue to demonstrate the capability to strike at will.
This ongoing maritime conflict has sparked concern among shipping companies, many of which are now re-routing vessels away from the region to avoid further incidents.
