A coalition of Muslim lawmakers in the United States has strongly condemned the wave of Islamophobic attacks directed at New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani after his historic re-election victory. Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim of Indian descent, recently secured a decisive win in his district, reinforcing his progressive political stance and grassroots support.
However, his victory has triggered a surge of hateful rhetoric, including targeted online abuse and public defamation. Fellow Muslim legislators and civil rights advocates have rallied in support of Mamdani, denouncing the attacks as part of a broader pattern of rising Islamophobia in American politics.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Congressman André Carson were among those who publicly backed Mamdani, calling the attacks “an assault on democracy and pluralism.” They emphasized that Muslim voices in governance must not be silenced through hate campaigns or bigoted fearmongering.
Zohran Mamdani, known for championing tenants’ rights and healthcare reform, vowed to continue serving all communities despite the vitriol. Civil rights organizations have urged social media platforms to crack down on hate speech and called for bipartisan condemnation of religious discrimination.
