The Palestinian group Hamas has accepted a new ceasefire proposal for the Gaza Strip, following mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar. The proposal, which was presented on Monday, has been agreed to by all Palestinian factions. Israel has not yet officially responded to the proposed agreement.
The ceasefire plan calls for a 60-day truce, during which there would be a phased release of hostages. In the first phase, at least 10 Israeli hostages and the bodies of several deceased captives would be released. The second phase would involve the release of the remaining hostages, which would be followed by more extensive negotiations.
The proposal aims to bring a comprehensive end to the conflict and includes guarantees for the protection of civilians. Further details of the agreement are expected to be announced in the coming days.
This development follows recent mass protests in Tel Aviv, where demonstrators called for an end to the war and the immediate release of all hostages. The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, with a Hamas-led attack that resulted in 1,219 deaths in Israel. The subsequent Israeli military offensive in Gaza has led to over 62,000 Palestinian deaths.
