London, May 24, 2025 — Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside 10 Downing Street on Friday, urging the UK government to cease arms exports to Israel and take decisive action against what they describe as a “catastrophic genocide” unfolding in Gaza.
Organized by pro-Palestinian groups, including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the protest was a direct response to the UK government’s recent condemnation of Israel’s military actions. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy labeled Israel’s offensive in Gaza as “egregious” and the suffering of Palestinians as “abominable.”
Despite these strong words, activists argue that the UK’s actions fall short. While the government suspended free trade talks with Israel and imposed sanctions on certain Israeli settlers, protesters contend that these measures are insufficient. They highlight ongoing UK arms exports to Israel, including components for F-35 fighter jets, as evidence of continued complicity.
John Rees, a British political activist, addressed the crowd, stating, “Starmer has lost this country on the question of Palestine. Before this statement was issued, I knew that Starmer was a hypocrite. I knew that Lammy was a liar.”
The protest underscores a growing demand among UK citizens for concrete actions over rhetoric, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies and the death toll rises.
