A senior aide to U.S. President Donald Trump has alleged that India is indirectly supporting Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian oil. The statement, which came amidst rising geopolitical tensions, has drawn significant attention ahead of the upcoming U.S. elections.
Speaking to media, the aide claimed that India’s oil trade with Russia is providing Moscow with financial lifelines, essentially fueling its war machine. He warned that this growing economic link could have diplomatic consequences, stating that “Washington cannot allow any country to support aggressor states through commercial trade.”
The comments follow earlier statements from the Trump campaign, which criticized the Biden administration for being lenient on nations maintaining ties with Russia. Trump’s camp has also suggested that future tariffs or economic sanctions could be imposed on countries that refuse to reconsider their energy relationships with Moscow.
Indian officials, however, have maintained that oil imports are guided by national interest and energy security. They emphasized that trade decisions are driven by economic needs, not political alignments. India has consistently asserted its position as a non-aligned nation, upholding strategic autonomy in international matters.
Despite mounting Western pressure, India has significantly increased its crude oil imports from Russia over the past year due to discounted prices, which help cushion inflation and reduce fuel costs domestically.
The issue is expected to remain a key topic in U.S.-India diplomatic engagements as the Ukraine conflict continues and global energy politics become increasingly complex.
