Assam MLA Aminul Islam Arrested Over Controversial Remarks on Pahalgam Attack
Guwahati, April 25, 2025 — Assam Police have arrested Aminul Islam, a three-term legislator from the Dhing constituency representing the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), following his controversial remarks suggesting that the recent Pahalgam incident was a conspiracy orchestrated by the central government.
In a video that circulated widely on social media, Islam alleged that both the 2019 Pulwama attack and the recent Pahalgam incident were government conspiracies aimed at inciting communal tensions. The Assam Police registered a suo motu case against him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to sedition and promoting enmity between different groups.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned Islam’s statements, asserting that any attempt to justify or normalize acts of terrorism would not be tolerated. He emphasized that such remarks go against the nation’s unity and integrity.
The AIUDF distanced itself from Islam’s comments, with party president Badruddin Ajmal stating that the views expressed were personal and not reflective of the party’s stance. Ajmal reiterated the party’s condemnation of the Pahalgam attack and emphasized that terrorism has no religion.
Islam is scheduled to be produced before the court today. His arrest has sparked discussions on the boundaries of free speech and the responsibilities of public representatives in maintaining communal harmony.
